MTBco's 2009 Fall Festival of Fury

Posted: Sep 24, 2009

Following on from 2008's epic Biketoberfest celebration of all things mountain biking related, MTBco ramp it up again to bring you the Fall Festival of Fury. What the heck? And who's been watching too many old Bruce Lee movies?

Bring out those old martial arts costumes, a rattly old nunchuka, a plastic death star and let's get the end of season party started. Get your ninja on!

It’s been a long time! We hope you’ve had a great season, which if the weather continues like this in these parts, looks like continuing for a few more weeks. Fall is the best time to ride in the Central Okanagan region of BC, Canada. We’re all dialed in, the weather is cooler, the dirt is tackier, and the trails have been well looked after.

So what do we have planned for you? In a word, a veritable festival of events. “MTBco’s Fall Festival of Fury” - we have six events of all types to end the season with a bang.

First up is the Gillard trailday on Sunday 4th October, meet at 10.00am. The usual affair, free breakfast , lunch and soft drinks. Bring your bikes (secure area at the parking lot) for a post-work ride. Please note, no shuttle service is provided so this is BYBAT (bring your bike and truck). If you don’t have a ride, you’re relying on the goodwill of others for an uplift. We’re also looking for a sponsor for this event to offset catering expenses so if you know of anyone email info@MTBco.ca

Next is the Venture Gear Postill Trailday on Sunday 18th October, meet at 9.00 am. Sponsored by Venture Gear, who seem to be adventurous with their events. First it was a pig roast, now it’s a trail day, BBQ movie show and timed race. The schedule looks like this - a bit of trailwork, fun race , some shuttle rides (BYBAT) then a free BBQ, then ease back with a movie show in the bush as night falls, and the campfire gets cooking up. Sounds too good to be true? It’s not; it’s the real deal thanks to Venture Gear.

On Sunday 25th October we have Kelowna Cycle’s Reaper Ripper. This is a fun race with a climb then descent through Myra Bellvue Provincial Park (AKA “Crawford”). Ride it solo or double up with a lean fit and healthy XC rider doing the climb and a rough gnarly downhill rider hitting the descent. More details available from Kelowna Cycle or check out the details on the MTBco website. Entry is $20 adults and $10 under 16’s (if already a club member).

On Sunday 1st November we have Kelowna Cycle’s Death Ride. Meet 10.00 am at the Gillard shuttle parking lot. What the heck’s the Death Ride you ask. Well...it’s a big day long festival of riding. Get breakfast, soft drinks and an amazing BBQ meal, shuttle the hill as much as you can. Rides are on a BYBAT basis. Demo bikes from Kelowna Cycle. Fancy dress with fun prizes for those that make the effort. Come along and make the event a big Halloween end of season celebration of the amazing mountain bike scene we have happening here in Kelowna. It’s your day so come and make it happen!

To wrap things up we have the Outbound Cycle Powers Creek trailday on Sunday 15th November, sponsored by Outbound Cycle. And if you’ve not seen the amazing work Dave and his crew have done on the 2.5km trail then you’re in for a treat. This is so buff and flowy.

Think that’s enough for a Fall Festival of Fury? Think again. We’re MTBco – we push the limits.

We’re lining up a premiere of the last in the series of New World Disorder’s “Dust and Bones” release. Date and venue will be available soon so check the club website and local bike shops for details. Movie premiere sponsored by Kelowna Cycle.

And there’s the small matter of the Kelowna bike park. We’re settled on a final design and it looks sick! Work should start soon but first we need everyone’s help. We need donations of materials and skilled labor to get this thing done. A list of materials and services that can be donated will be available on the website soon. Contact info@MTBco.ca if you can help or know a business that can support this initiative. Let’s get this thing built!

In other news there’s a new trail at Gillard – come to the trail day or Death Ride to find it. The new school freeride fest that is Inferno (Postill) is finished. Rich Deakin has been busy writing a monthly MTB column for Off Centre Magazine. There’s been various epic road trips to Sun Peaks/Kamloops, Nelson, Sunshine Coast, and other places. Lots of meetings with the City of Kelowna and contractors for the bike park.

That’s a hell of a lot of stuff, but that’s it, that’s all. We hope to see you at some of the events and hope your 2009 has been as good as ours.

Check back on the MTBco website for more information and updates about these events.

Keep it tight,
Gnar

To anyone who does not speak the American variant of English, this sounds like an event where riders fall off their bikes in a furious yet festive way. To all other English speakers read “MTBco's 2009 Autumn Festival of Fury”.

What an awesome lineup of events! Not many clubs can boast such an active community, plus the guys I met from MTBco were all top notch, standup riders & people. I hope the weather holds out for y'all until mid November.
