MTBco revolution: 2009

Posted: Jan 12, 2009

MTBco achieved a lot in 2008 but 2009 promises to deliver even more.

2009: The mountain biking revolution continues.

Read on to find out how we're aiming to make British Columbia's Central Okanagan region a compelling place to add to your list of riding destinations.

KELOWNA MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK:

Preliminary budget approval has been received from City Council for the design and construction, in 2009, of Kelowna’s first mountain bike skills park.

The south Rutland site is a 3.8 hectare parcel of city owned land on the east side of Mission Creek at the intersection of Hollywood Road South and East Kelowna Road. The Mission Creek Greenway runs through part of the site. The site was identified as the highest priority location by Cascade Environmental Resources Group, authors of the draft Kelowna and Area Mountain Bike Strategy.

City staff will be proceeding with design of the Hollywood Road Mountain Bike Skills Park over the next few months and will be consulting with MTBco, our members, and the public during this process on facility design and partnership opportunities.

THE WORD:

MTBco needs input from local riders who are interested in supporting the bike park. We'll need people to work with the City, Cascade Environmental (the consultants) and the bike park designers and contracted builders. We'll need volunteers to put shovel to dirt, and to maintain the park once it's built, include looking after the jumps/stunts, watering, and regular site cleaning. We'll also need to organize bike park events and competitions.

Business sponsors who'd like to offer any financial or in-kind support, labor, supplies, etc, please contact info@MTBco.ca

Step up at the AGM (details below), email us info@MTBco.ca or post up right here on Pinkbike. Or if you're prepared to leave the warm and comfortable confines of Pinkbike for a few seconds, then head over to MTBco. Go on. You know you want to.

We also want to know your thoughts about the park. What type of lines, size, what about freeride stunts, learner skills areas, etc. Anything you feel strongly about, then post up. What about best practice? Do you know what works in our climate and terrain? Dry and dusty. Pitch in, send us the info or the low down.

2008 YEAR IN REVIEW

In our first year, we did some cool stuff...

2008 was a BIG year for MTBco. We officially became a club in February 2008; we established ourselves as a non-profit organization and worked on many different initiatives to help the club grow.

2008 saw the launch of our website and our logo design, 8 trail clean up and maintenance days at the different trail areas through out Kelowna and West Kelowna. 3 movie premieres including Kranked 7, Seasons, and NWD9 and a lot of behind the scene work on various on going projects like the City of Kelowna Mountain Bike Strategy, MTBco soft goods production and sale, MTBco maps for Gillard, Powers Creek and Postil, insurance requirements, and moved forward on dialogue about land usage agreements.

2008 also saw the aggressive recruitment of supporters and sponsors (700+ club members and 10 club sponsors). We are happy to report that due to the level of support we finished 2008 in the black with some $5000 plus in the club account. It’s thanks to our support that we have a good base to get a jump on the 2009 projects but in order to complete these projects and reach our goals in 2009 we will be asking for continued support and will be actively searching for additional sponsorship opportunities throughout our community.

The MTBco executive and its members donated over 3500 voluntary hours to running the club, planning and delivering events, and in trailwork time. That's just about the coolest part of MTBco. We're giving it all back to the riding community and the trails.

Ride on, ride hard, ride fast, ride often. But just ride.

"why can't they do that in ontario?"

Who are "they"? Step up and organize it if you want it to happen!

"They" are us, you me, all of us. "They should clear this trail", "they should build a bike park", "they should gps all our trails and have nice pretty maps just for me".

"They" can be "me" if people step up and make it happen.

Yes it is a "smaller" park area, but discussions at City of Kelowna for "Epic" rides, on protected land, over 30 km are also in the works. This park fits a niche and users should feel privliged as other programs were cut in the recent municipal budget. It is a significant comittment just as Ben Lee skate board park was. Props to the city for recognizing the needs of the non tax paying youth.
